In 1981, 20-year-old Fernando Valenzuela took Los Angeles (and Major League Baseball) by storm, winning his first 8 decisions and leading the Dodgers to the World Championship. That year, Valenzuela became the only player in Major League history to win the Rookie of the Year award and the Cy Young Award in the same season, adding the Silver Slugger Award and World Series championship for good measure. With his youthful charm, devastating screwball, Ruthian physique and a connection with Los Angeles' large Latino community, Valenzuela touched off an early '80s craze dubbed "Fernandomania". This jersey comes to us from Orel Hershiser. Inside the rear collar is the “W.A. Goodman & Sons” manufacturer’s label with wash instructions and jersey size “44”. On the left front tail is the “Set P” grey strip tag indicating Playoffs. Below is the year “1981” label. Across the front is “Dodgers” in blue on white tackle twill. Player number “34” appears on front in red tackle twill and on back in blue on white twill. Player name “VALENZUELA” appears across the back in blue on white tackle twill. The jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as team issued and in our opinion, shows no use. Accompanied by a LOA from Orel Hershiser.
