After winning the Heisman trophy in 1959 at LSU, Billy Cannon played for the Houston Oilers of the AFL from 1960-63. During the 1961 season, he led the AFL in rushing yards. Cannon, at halfback, scored an 88-yard touchdown on a pass from George Blanda in the first AFL Championship game in 1961, a 24-16 victory over the Chargers. He scored the only touchdown in the Oilers’ repeat victory over the San Diego Chargers in the second-ever AFL Championship game the following season. We were told by our consignor that he obtained this shirt after a home game in 1961 while in the Houston Oilers locker room. On the left inseam of this cotton durene shirt is the “King O’Shea” manufacturer’s tag which is fraying. Attached is a blank white label. Player number “20” appears on the front, back and on both sleeves. Player name “CANNON” appears on back on a light blue soft twill nameplate. All numbers and letters are done in white tackle twill. There are stains on the front numbers which appears to be blood. There is a large team repair on the right sleeve atop the players number. Several other team repairs are present throughout the shirt. The jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion, shows outstanding use.
