David Thompson and George Gervin had been competing all year in 1978 for the scoring crown and they entered the final day of the season separated by .02 of a point. Thompson’s Denver Nuggets would play in the afternoon and he finished with 73. Gervin’s Spurs played their final game later on that night and he knew he would need at least 58 points to hold the scoring crown. George’s teammates fed him the ball all night as he finished with 63 points, winning the scoring title by 0.07 of a point. It capped off the tightest scoring race in NBA history. We were told by our consignor that he obtained this shirt directly from David Thompson. As the story goes, Thompson told our consignor he wore this shirt in his 73 point game on April 9, 1978. Thompson went on to say that he was issued two home jerseys and two roads, and never wore his back-ups. On April 9, 1978, the last day of the regular NBA season, Thompson scored 73 points against the Detroit Pistons. On the left front tail is the “Powers” manufacturer’s tag with “Size 46” which is heavily faded. Adjacent is a flag tag with “2 L-B”. Across the front is “Denver”. Player number “33” appears on both the front and back. All these numbers and letters are done in white on yellow tackle twill. Player name “THOMPSON” appears across the back in white tackle twill block lettering on a blue satin nameplate. Thompson has signed the back numbers twice, once in black marker rating an 8 and again which is very faded. The jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion, shows outstanding use. Accompanied by a LOA from JSA.
