This jersey is a true piece of NY Mets history and is probably the first shirt worn by Manager Gil Hodges in 1968. On the left front tail is the “Spalding” manufacturer’s tag. Adjacent is the size “44” tag. Below is a wash instructions label with attached “SET 1 1967” flag tag. Inside the rear collar is a strip tag with “44 67 44” indicating jersey size, year and original number. Across the front is “Mets”. Player/Manager number “14” appears on both the front and back. All numbers and letters are done in blue felt on orange tackle twill. There is a number change. Al Schmelz wore number “44” as a player in 1967, the original number on this jersey and then this same shirt was worn by new Mets Manager Gil Hodges during the 1968 season, with Hodges wearing number “14”. On the left sleeve is the team disc patch. The jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used, then managers worn and in our opinion, shows appropriate wear. Other than what is mentioned there appears to be no further alterations of any kind.
