This jersey was worn by Willie Mays as a coach for the 1975 NY Mets. In 1976, the Mets changed jersey manufacturer’s, no longer wearing “Rawlings”. We believe this shirt to have been prepared for Mays to wear in 1976, with the Payson/Stengel armband being added. Additionally, this shirt was incorrectly listed by a different auction house as 1976 Issued. On the left front tail is the “Rawlings” manufacturer’s tag with wash instructions and jersey size “42”. Attached is a flag tag with “SET 1 #8P 1975”. Inside the rear collar is a strip tag with “42 75 24” embroidered in blue chain stitch. Across the front is “Mets”. Number “24” appears on both the front and back. All numbers and letters are done in blue on orange tackle twill. Mays has signed the front in black marker adding the inscription “Best Wishes” rating an 8-9. On the left sleeve is the team disc patch. Adjacent is the Payson/Stengel black memorial armband. The jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as Coach’s worn and in our opinion, shows wear. Accompanied by a LOA from JSA. This is a good an example of a Mays coach’s jersey you will see.
