In 1988, Orel Hershiser put together what is arguably one of the best single seasons in pitching history. Hershiser’s 23-8 record was best in the majors along with his totals for innings pitched (267), and complete games (15). Orel finished up the season with a record-breaking 59 consecutive scoreless innings pitched, a mark previously held by former Dodger and Hall of Famer, Don Drysdale. Hershiser’s astounding numbers made him the clear-cut winner of the National League Cy Young Award and he also won his first Gold Glove for his performance in the field. “Bulldog” earned the nickname given to him by manager Tommy LaSorda with his continued his dominance in the postseason. He was named MVP of the NLCS but he wasn’t through yet. Hershiser capped off his historic season in the World Series by pitching a shutout in Game 2 and allowing two runs in a complete game series-clinching victory in Game 5. He was named the World Series MVP and is the only player in MLB history to receive the Cy Young award, the Championship Series MVP award, and the World Series MVP award in the same season. This trophy stands 14” tall with a 10” impressive etched glass cup atop a 4” wooden base. Both the etched glass and the plaque on front read “The Sporting News 1988 Major League Player of the Year Orel Hershiser LA Dodgers”. On each side of the base is a plaque with previous winners names listed from 1936-1987. EX-NM overall, accompanied by a LOA from Orel Hershiser. Due to fragility, this lot will require additional packaging and shipping charges.
