After winning the pennants on the final day of the regular season, The Yankees and Dodgers with identical records were set to oppose one another in the 1949 World Series. Game 1, held on October 5th at Yankee Stadium was destined to be an all-time classic. It was the first World Series game to be televised to a mass audience. The opposing pitchers, Allie Reynolds and Don Newcombe were both superb throughout the game. Entering the 9th, the game was scoreless with Brooklyn getting only 2 hits. The Yanks had managed but 4 hits. The Dodgers went quietly in the top of the 9th as the stage was set for a dramatic finish. Leading off for the Yanks was “Old Reliable”, Tommy Henrich. The Brooklyn Dodgers would soon find out why he earned that nickname. History was made when on a 2-0 count, Henrich hit a walk off home run into the lower right field stands. “Old Reliable” had come through once again, hitting the first walk-off homer in World Series history. Offered here is THE baseball hit by Henrich. OAL Harridge baseball with “Home Run Ball Hit off Don Newcombe first Game 1949 World Series Last of 9th Yankees 1 Dodgers 0”, all in Henrich’s hand. On the south panel is “49WS” in an unknown hand. The ball shows excellent game-use with dirt spotting throughout and is somewhat toned. This historic baseball is accompanied by a LOA from JSA as well as a LOA stating that the ball was originally obtained from Henrich himself. Further accompanied by an additional LOA.
