Muddy Ruel spent 19 seasons in the Bigs and was one of the top defensive catchers of his era. He is best remembered for scoring the winning run for the Washington Senators in Game 7 of the 1924 World Series and, for being the battery-mate of Hall of Famer, Walter Johnson. He spent a decade (1935-45) as a coach with the White Sox, before an unprecedented promotion after the '45 campaign, when he became an assistant to Commissioner of Baseball Happy Chandler. Inside the rear collar is the “Gold Smith” manufacturer’s tag. Above is player name (misspelled first name) “Harold Ruel” in red chain stitch on a felt strip tag. On the left tail is “40 ’44 1” embroidered in red chain stitch representing the size, year, and set, respectively. Across the front is “CHICAGO”. On back is the coach’s number “38”. All numbers and letters are done in blue on red tackle twill. A patch has been removed from the left sleeve. Inside the rear waistband of the matching pants is “Harold Ruel” embroidered in red chain stitch on a felt strip tag, with the same misspelled first name. Below is “34 1 ’44” embroidered in red chain stitch representing the size, set, and year, respectively. There are no manufacturer’s tags present. The zipper front is fully functional. Also included is a pair of matching thick socks. The jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as coach’s worn and in our opinion, shows excellent wear. Other than what is mentioned, there appear to be no further alterations of any kind. Magnificent condition overall.
