Abdul-Jabbar entered the NBA in 1969 as a Milwaukee Buck when the NBA was ripe for the emergence of a new dominant big man. That year, he transformed the Bucks from a 27-55 team to a 56-26 record while finishing second in scoring and third in rebounding; numbers easily garnering him the NBA Rookie of the Year. The very next year, Abdul-Jabbar would earn League MVP when he and new teammate, Oscar Robertson gave the Bucks their first and only NBA Championship. This historically significant name transition Milwaukee Bucks warm-up shirt was worn by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar during this time period. This shooting shirt dates precisely from the time of Jabbar's rookie era name change. The shirt features player name “JABBAR” on the reverse. Jabbar, born Lew Alcindor, converted from Catholicism to Islam and changed his name to Kareem (noble and generous) Abdul (serves Allah) Jabbar (powerful). Although his name change took place prior to his entering the NBA, he didn’t make the change public until his second NBA season in 1971. This jersey reflects that name change. The white knit is lettered “JABBAR” on back, with clear evidence of a vintage name change. We were told by our consignor that the original nameplate “Alcindor” has been removed and the stitch outline of its former location is clearly visible as explained in an additional LOA. “JABBAR” is lettered directly on the back in green on red tackle twill. Inside the rear collar is the “Sand-Knit” manufacturer’s tag wash instructions and size “40”. The shirt measures bigger. Above is the “Mid–City Sporting Goods” distributor’s tag. At the left chest is the team large “BUCKS” basketball patch embroidered in white and red chain stitch on green tackle twill. Jabbar has signed the front in black marker “Abdul Jabbar” rating an 8-9. There are some small stains on front consistent with its age and usage. The shirt is properly tagged, was presented to us as worn and in our opinion, shows wear. Other than the historic Alcindor to Jabbar name transition, there appear to be no further alterations. Accompanied by a LOA from JSA as well as an additional LOA.
