The first African-American player in the American League, Larry Doby was a power-hitting center fielder and a key member of Cleveland's pennant winners in 1948 and '54. Before joining the Indians, he starred with the Negro National League's Newark Eagles for four seasons, leading them to a championship in 1946. A nine-time All-Star (seven times with the Indians and twice with the Eagles), Doby twice led the American League in homers and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998. “Rawlings” manufactured “MC” (Mort Cooper) model 11-¼” fielder’s glove. The manufacturers tagging includes Rawlings original “St. Louis” label and their shield button. Both appear on the back of the wrist strap. Interior stamping is almost completely worn away. “Professional” and “Mort Cooper” are barely visible on the heel of the glove. The glove is constructed of top-of-the-line Horween leather and features a solid web and a conventional back with a “Snugger Adjustment” wrist strap. The glove was presented to us as game-used and exhibits evidence of outstanding use. Accompanied by a LOA from Denny Esken of PSA/DNA as well as a notarized LOA from Susan Doby Robinson, daughter of Larry Doby. Also included is an autographed 8” x 10” color photo of Doby with a similar glove.
