Thurman Munson is the only Yankee to ever win AL Rookie of the Year and a AL MVP. He won two World Series with the Yankees and was named the team’s first captain since Lou Gehrig. On August 2, 1979, Munson tragically died in a plane accident. Original locker nameplate from Thurman Munson’s last major league baseball game played before his tragic fatal plane crash that shocked New York Yankee and baseball fans everywhere. The nameplate was retrieved from Thurman Munson’s locker in the visitor’s clubhouse at Comiskey Park by the Chicago White Sox Visitors Clubhouse Attendant after learning of the crash which occurred the day after the Yankees completed their 3 game series playing the Sox on August 1, 1979. Munson passed away the following day while practicing take-offs and landings in his small plane in his hometown of Canton, Ohio. The 12 X 2.75 handmade nameplate inscribed “Munson 15” in black marker is described in great detail in an accompanying letter from the attendant himself who retrieved the nameplate and describes assisting another staff member in making it by hand several years earlier for visiting players. New tags were made only when a roster change occurred on a team. In his letter of provenance, he also provides a timeline of the nameplate’s whereabouts’ since it was removed from Thurman Munson’s locker. All other effects of the visiting Yankee players had already been packed and forwarded to the team’s next destination. An original color photograph of the Clubhouse attendant "in uniform" is also included. Comes with a LOA from the ball boy.
