Havlicek competed for 16 seasons with the Boston Celtics, winning eight NBA titles. In the NBA, only teammates Bill Russell and Sam Jones won more championship rings during their playing careers. Havlicek is considered one of the best NBA players in history, especially on defense, and was inducted as a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1984. Havlicek was drafted by both the Celtics and the NFL's Cleveland Browns in 1962. After competing briefly as a wide receiver in the Browns' training camp that year, he focused his energies on playing for the Celtics, with head coach Red Auerbach later describing him as the "guts of the team." Nicknamed "Hondo", (a name inspired by the John Wayne movie of the same name), Havlicek revolutionized the "sixth man" role, and has been immortalized for his clutch steal in the closing seconds of the 1965 Eastern Conference championship. On the inside front button path is a "Sand-Knit" size “44” manufacturer’s tag with wash instructions. Inside the rear collar is a Sand-Knit tag that reads “Designed & Tailored Exclusively For The BOSTON CELTICS” tag. The player number “17” is written on this tag in black marker. Across the front is "CELTICS" in white on yellow tackle twill. On each sleeve is the official "Celtics Shamrock" logo in white on yellow tackle twill. Below on the front right is a rare “MASSACHUSETTS BICENTENNIAL” patch embroidered in green stitching. On the back is the player name "HAVLICEK" in green tackle twill on a white name plate. This warm-up jacket is properly tagged, was presented to us as player-worn and in our opinion shows appropriate wear.
