Two original black and white mug shots of the notorious gangster and bank robber, John Dillinger; the F.B.I.’s first “Public Enemy Number One”. Each mug shot measures 2-¼” x 2-¾” and have been printed onto one 3” x 5” card. The left image is a profile of Dillinger’s left side, the right shows Dillinger facing the camera holding the number “13225”. “Dillinger, John” is written on the verso in the upper left corner. adjacent to the right is a 3” x 2-?” card that has been affixed to the larger card with the following text printed: “WANTED - WANTED - BANK ROBBERY - JOHN DILLINGER, white, 3- yrs., 170 lbs., 5’7¼” tall, light chest. hair, grey eyes, med. comp. SCARS & MARKS: Cut cic. ¾” long at base of middle finger. Any information or if located, notify the Indiana State Police, Room #126, State House, Indianapolis, or the nearest Sheriff or Police Authority.” Beneath the printed text is the following hand-written addition, “Killed - Chicago Ill. July 22-1934.” These two mug shots were taken during the 9-½ years Dillinger served in the Indiana penal system. The mug shots were distributed to police agencies in August of 1933 after he robbed the Bluffton Citizen National Bank. Dillinger was captured and jailed in September of 1933 but escaped and murdered the Sheriff the following month. He was arrested once again in Tucson, Arizona on January 25, 1934 — charged with murder and bank robbery only to escape once again on March 3, 1934. He was tracked down by federal agents on July 22, 1934, Dillinger pulled a weapon and attempted to flee but was shot four times and killed. The mugshots are in VG condition, a true piece of “Gangster Era” history.
