Civil War-dated autograph letter signed by Abner Doubleday, United States Army officer and Union general in the American Civil War who is sometimes credited with having invented baseball. Doubleday has signed the letter “A. Doubleday”, it measures 5” x 8” and is two pages, front and back. Dated March 2, 1862 in Washington D.C., addressed to Colonel William H. Christian, commander of Fort Lyon in Virginia. The letter is regarding Doubleday’s appointment as Inspector of Washington’s defenses. Doubleday has penned the letter in blue ink with the signature rating a 8-9. The letter is in EX condition. Included is the hand-addressed yellow envelope the letter was mailed in as well as a manila transmittal cover and original “Special Order 54” from S. Williams, Office Chief of Artillery, assigning Doubleday to “duty as Inspector of the defensive works about Washington, and to the immediate charge of those on the Maryland side.” Accompanied by a LOA from JSA.
