This 1 3/4" x 1 3/4" big face Elgin gold pocket watch, has a story to tell. It is in excellent+ condition and it works. There are a few scratches on the case. The inside of the back case has been engraved Medley Relay Race Carlisle Indians vs 65 Regt A.A. Won By Carlisle April 1, 1910. The letter from William Thorpe tells the rest of the story. The watch was awarded to the track and field athletes at the Carlisle Indian School after they defeated the 35th Regiment on April 1, 1910. Jim Thorpe's son goes on to state that he recieved this watch from a gentleman who had purchased it from a jeweler in Carlisle Pennsylvania. The jeweler stated that the watch, had at one time been owned by Jim Thorpe. It is the watch that had been awarded to the athlete, most people agree, was the greatest ever.
