1” x ½” x ¼” steel piece from the 1905 Wright Flyer III airplane. The Wright Flyer III was the first reliably functional airplane and the third and most famous incarnation of the Wright Flyer. After testing the plane, it was disassembled by the Wright brothers to protect their design from being duplicated. It was then later reassembled by the brothers and crashed into a field. In 1947, Louis P. Christman acquired, repaired and assembled it again. Currently, it is on display in a museum at Carillon Historical Park and was deemed a National Historic Landmark. This piece of steel comes from Christman’s personal collection. The piece of steel is in NM-MT condition, considering its age, with some tarnishing.
