Playing in the bone-chilling winds of Shea Stadium had its ups and downs for the New York Jets, but it was the early years at the drafty, noisy ballpark in Flushing, New York that gave the team its tough, resilient character in the late 1960s. As stark and simple as this corridor sign from the bowels of Shea is, diehard Jet fans will free-associate all kinds of mental images with the words "Jets Locker Room" in white lettering on a 24" x 36"green metal siding. In fact, one can almost see Joe Namath striding under the sign, telling Don Maynard to go deep against the Raiders before the 1968 AFL championship game. The sign, which was taken down when the Jets moved to the Meadowlands in the mid-‘80s, shows the scars and pock-marking of age, but will forever reflect the sunshine of January 12, 1969 when that locker room became the home of champions.
