Johnstone was best known for pulling off a number of infamous pranks during his playing days. Some pranks included placing a soggy brownie inside Steve Garvey’s first base mitt, setting teammate's cleats on fire, locking Dodger manager Tommy Lasorda in his office during Spring Training and dressing up as a groundskeeper and sweeping the Dodger Stadium infield in between innings. During a pre-game warm up once, he climbed atop the Dodger dugout and, in full game uniform, walked through the field boxes at Dodger Stadium to the concession stand to get a hot dog. Another time he dressed up in Lasorda's uniform (with padding underneath) and ran out to the mound to talk to the pitcher while carrying Lasorda's book and a can of Slim Fast. Many of these pranks, along with other aspects of his career, are described in the books he co-authored with sports columnist Rick Talley; “Temporary Insanity”, “Over the Edge”, and “Some of My Best Friends Are Crazy”, which is included in this lot. On the front left tail is the “TIM McAULIFFE” manufacturer’s tag with two flag tags reading the year “‘67” and size “42”. Adjacent below is a brown felt strip tag with “Johnstone” in orange chain-stitching. Across the front reads “ANGELS”. On the back is the player number “10”. All lettering and numbering is done in navy blue felt on red tackle twill. Johnstone has signed the front of the jersey in black marker with the added inscriptions “10” and “”GAME USED””, in our opinion the large signature rates a strong 9. The jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows excellent use. Accompanied by a LOA by JSA, an 8x10” autographed photo of Johnstone and a hardcover copy of his 1990 book, “Some of My Best Friends Are Crazy” (unsigned).
