Hebner was traded to the Mets on March 27, 1979. This alternate uniform was made up prior to his departure from Philadelphia. As with all teams, uniform changes occur throughout a team’s history. Some are positive and stick for a long time while others see a short shelf life. The “Saturday Night” burgundy alternate uniform the Phillies produced in 1979 had the shortest of shelf lives, only lasting one night. They produced these to be worn for their Saturday games, which earned the nickname the “Saturday Night Specials”. The nickname may be the best part about them. The fans and the media had a field day at the Phillies’ expense, comparing the uniforms to pajamas. On the front right tail is a “Rawlings” size “44” manufacturer’s tag with washing instructions and a flag tag that reads, “SET 1 1979”. Adjacent is a burgundy strip tag with “44 79 1” embroidered on it. On the left chest is the team’s “P” logo. On the right chest and on the back is the player number “18”. Across the back reads the player name, “HEBNER” on a burgundy nameplate. All numbering and lettering are done in the same white tackle twill. On the inside of the rear waistline is a “Rawlings” size “34” manufacturer’s tag with washing instructions. Adjacent is a white strip tag with “34 24 18 79 1” embroidered on it. Attached adjacent is a flag tag that reads, “SET 1 1979”. The uniform is properly tagged and was presented to us as team-issued.
