Johnny “The Big Cat” Mize is regarded as one of the top first basemen in baseball history for his impressive offensive accomplishments and also for his smooth fielding on the diamond. The 1940 season was one of Mize’s best, as he led the National League in home runs with 43 and RBI’s with 137. He was named to the NL All-Star team that season and led the league in slugging, OPS, total bases and extra base hits as well as other offensive categories. Mize ended his career as a ten-time All-Star, five-time World Series Champion, four-time NL Home Run Champion, three-time NL RBI Champion and NL Batting Champion earning him a spot in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981. On the inner rear collar of the grey flannel jersey is the “Rawlings” manufacturer’s tag that also reads “ST.LOUIS”. Adjacent to the left is a white strip tag with the size “46” embroidered in red. On the front right tail it reads “Johnny Mize” in red chain-stitching. Across the front of the jersey reads “Cardinals” in red embroidery stitch with a blue embroidery stitch outline. Going through the letter "C" is a black embroidered bat with a red embroidered Cardinal perched on each end. Across the back of the jersey is the player number “10” in red on navy blue felt. The zipper appears to be restored and the jersey has some period repairs. On the inner rear waistband of the matching grey flannel pants is the “Rawlings” manufacturer’s tag that also reads “ST.LOUIS”. Adjacent to the left is an off-white felt strip tag that reads “Johnny Mize” in red chain-stitching. Adjacent to the right is the pants size “38 REGULAR” embroidered in red. In the fly of the pants is the year “41” in red chain-stitching. This exceedingly rare uniform ensemble is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion it shows excellent use and is all original in fantastic overall condition.
