After establishing his Hall of Fame career in New York from 1967 to 1977, the New York Mets respected the fact that Tom Seaver’s No. 41 would never be issued to another player. A World Series champion, 12-time All-Star and three-time National League Cy Young Award winner, Seaver attempted one last comeback in 1987 with the Mets. After being hit hard in three exhibition outings against Triple-A teams, Seaver announced his retirement. A first ballot Hall of Famer in 1992, the Mets retired Seaver’s No. 41 in 1988. On the inside of the front left tail is a “Rawlings” manufacturer’s tag. Attached below is a strip tag with, “87 1 41” embroidered on it in blue stitching and attached adjacent is a strip tag that reads, “SET 1 1987”. This is the retail variation and matches a very similar 1987 Keith Hernandez home jersey that entered the hobby as a jersey customized by Gerry Cosby. It is likely that these unique qualities can be explained due to the rushed nature of his attempted comeback. Across the chest reads, “Mets”, the player number “41” appears on both the front and on the back and across the back reads the player name, “SEAVER”. All numbering and lettering are done in blue on orange tackle twill sewn directly onto the pinstripe jersey. On the right sleeve reads, “Rawlings” in white stitching. This jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as a game jersey and in our opinion shows appropriately little use.

Please note that a correction and/or update has been made to this lot and the printed catalog differs from what is online.
