You'd hop on either the 2, 3, 4 or 5 subway trains that had a "Flatbush Avenue" sign in the window, settle into an itchy wicker seat under a broken fan and swelter on a clackety ride to Bedford Avenue. It was the usual routine of any Brooklyn Dodgers fan from the 1920s to the dark, dark year of 1958. To get to the promised land of Ebbets Field, the subway would be your carriage. Ebbets Field, of course, is no longer on the subway trains that roar under Flatbush Avenue, but when it was, this classic sign was a Dodger fan's beacon. The chipped paint, scratches, bumps, bruises and pock marks on the tan surface of the 31" x 6" sign box are history's validation of its past nobility. The white on black, 22" long "Flatbush Avenue" sign is one location on a scroll that lists other stops along the line, such as "Dyre Avenue" and the end of the line, "Times Square." The scroll is controlled by a crank handle on top. "Real" Dodger fans agree on one thing: "Flatbush Avenue" will speak for the team in a way that "Chavez Ravine" never will.
