A joke used to be told about Griffith Stadium in which fans were in the park and one noted that the stadium had been built in only 18 days in 1911. Looking around the park that was home to the Washington Senators until it was torn down in 1965, the other fan shook his head in amazement. "You mean it took that long?" he said. As motley and dilapidated as Griffith Stadium was, however, with one roof higher than the rest, its erector-set construction, and its bleachers built around a tree, it was a storied place where the president threw out the first ball of the season every opening day and where Mickey Mantle blasted a 565-foot home run in 1956. This seat from the Griffith Stadium grandstand is painted gray and has a number "3" painted on the upper back slat. It is in excellent condition with some minor chipping in spots.
