In their flannel knickers and wool turtleneck sweaters, the Philadelphia A's look more like an Ivy League football team than major league baseball champions in this vintage team photo from 1911, a year when the A's won their second straight championship within a 5-year span that yielded 3 titles and 4 AL pennants. The A's had four future Hall of Famers on the field – Eddie Collins, "Home Run" Baker, Eddie Plank and Chief Bender – and one in the dugout, owner-manager Connie Mack. Proving that things really weren't all that different then, within three years Mack would lose some of these stars when he couldn't meet their salary demands and they defected to the Federal League. In the 6 ½" x 18 ½" photo, the imperious Mack stands ramrod-straight in the center decked out in a crisp three-piece suit and bowler hat. Identified by their names under their images, Collins and Baker are in the group to the left of Mack, with Bender and Plank to the right. Also on the right are the other two members, with Collins and Baker, of the A's "Million-Dollar Infield," Stuffy McInnis and Jack Barry. The photo is framed under glass in an 11" x 24 ½" brown wood frame which is in good condition.
