Although this image of Babe Ruth is a photograph, it has the look of a hand-crafted Currier & Ives print. Indeed, this original photo dating back to 1919 is a slice of Americana that transcends baseball. In 1919, America was at war in Europe. At home, baseball was sullied by the "Black Sox" scandal. The game, and the nation, needed a new hero to put the pieces back together. George Herman Ruth would be that hero. An overgrown kid who could pitch as well as he could hit home runs, the Babe would spend his final season with the Boston Red Sox that year before being traded to the New York Yankees, where destiny awaited him. The 4" x 7" photo of Ruth winding up with the ball over his head is somewhat scratched and creased, with some tearing in the area of his forehead, but the puckish look in his eye is priceless and the contrast of the photo under glass in a near-pristine black-edged, 15 ½" x 18 ½" frame with a light tan interior background sets the photo apart as a wonderful and quaint timepiece.
