Asked to leave the Polo Grounds when his Yankees began outdrawing the Giants in 1920, owner Jacob Ruppert built what would become the game's holy shrine. It was in Yankee Stadium that the Yankees became the Bronx Bombers. In 1923, they capped off their inaugural season there by winning the first of their 27 championships. Then, as now, the team enjoys the biggest home-field advantage in baseball. On April 23, 1924, they opened their second season at the Stadium by defeating the Boston Red Sox 13-4 and this International Newsreel Photo captures the relaxed cockiness of the team as they received their World Series gifts from Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis. The excellent-condition 8" x 9 ½" glossy is handsomely sepia-toned and has only minor creases on the outer edges.
