Babe Ruth exemplifies everything that our National Pastime represents at a level exceeding the game itself. Each day, his popularity increases profoundly, with avid collectors looking to grab any of his most valuable artifacts. Not many could be more pleasing than the brilliant 1933 Goudey that provides eye appeal beyond the technical assessment. The 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth card is listed as the seventh most popular sports card in the hobby in PSA’s Top 250 Sportscards publication. Offered in this lot is one of those four Ruth Goudey’s, the highly coveted half-body/red background #149 swing pose in a stellar PSA 4 holder. The resolution of this classic illustration is outstanding, with the iconic central image batting pose portraying clear focus. Apparently blemish free, the hallowed pose is set against a super clean bright red background that is extremely well centered between four relatively clean borders. No obtrusive surface flaws are evident, and you can almost feel the crack of the bat as Ruth completes his legendary swing. Vivid print registration, sharp edging, mildly touched corners depicting even wear, and a bright verso complete this “Ruthian” marvel that emanates aesthetics far beyond its assigned grade. To the delight of a seemingly infinite number of vintage collectors, it is by no coincidence that in 1933, the Goudey Gum Company decided to issue four separate Ruth cards in their legendary gum set, with this sparkling Ruth offering unquestionably residing as one of the “Sultan of Swat’s” foremost cardboard issues. PSA has graded this card VG-EX 4.
