The 1996 World Series was the proving ground for Joe Torre's New York Yankees to begin another dynasty that has netted the team four titles in the last five years. After dropping the first two games at home to the defending champion Atlanta Braves, the Bronx Bombers broke open a close Game three with a three-run eighth inning to win 5-2 behind David Cone. However, Game four was the real turning point. Down 6-0 after five, the Yankees battled back, eventually tying it on a clutch homer by unsung hero Jim Leyritz in the eighth, then completed the improbable comeback by scoring two in the 10th to post an 8-6 victory. The stunned Braves never recovered, but it took great pitching, especially out of the bullpen by John Wetteland, before the Yanks could claim the final two games, 1-0 and 3-2, and drink champagne. This World Series Championship trophy is the same kind that was given to Wetteland for his Series MVP performance. It measures 12" in height and is in near mint condition. The Yankees and Braves press pins are mounted on the base and a raised golden crown is surrounded by gold pennants for every big league team.
