When Ted Williams came to the Major Leagues with the Red Sox in 1939, he made an immediate impact as he led the American League in RBIs, the first rookie to do so. His batting average in 1941 finished at .406, and no one has reached .400 since. He led the league in batting average, runs and total bases six times, and won the Triple Crown (1942, 1947) and the American League Most Valuable Player (1946, 1949) twice. In the rear sweatband is a Wilson manufacturer’s tag and a size “7 3/8” stamp. The size “7 3/8” also appears on a hanging flag tag underneath the sweatband. On the inside rear of the hat is a materials tag. There is a player name that appears to read “Tom Grieve” written in the rear waistband that is faded. Adjacent written in black marker is “Ted Williams”. These professional model caps were not available for retail sale during this era. Our consignor’s family was gifted this hat directly from Williams himself. This hat is properly tagged and was presented to us as manager worn.
