On Sunday August 22, 1999, "Big Mac" stood alone among all the legendary home run hitters as he became the only player to hit 50 or more homers for four consecutive years. The feat was accomplished at Shea Stadium in the first game of a doubleheader against the Mets as McGwire hit two homers, one over each power-alley wall. After the completion of the second game, McGwire threw his hat into the crowded field box seats. Fortunately for our consignor, he ended up catching this historical cap. The hat is a tremendous example of historical, professional game-used equipment. The dark blue and red hat is made of 100% wool and is a size 7 ½ . The Cardinal logo is on the front of the hat and the MLB trademark is on the back. This "59 Fifty" style hat was made exclusively for Major League ballplayers. The player number "25" is written in black Sharpie and appears under the well worn brim of the hat. Stains from perspiration are apparent on the underside of the brim and on the white sewn cloth. A letter of authenticity from the consignor accompanies this piece along with a ticket stub and box score print-out from the game.
