Bill Dickey was the premier catcher of the 1930s and early 1940s. Because of his accomplishments on the field, the New York Yankees retired his uniform number "8". Ironically, Dickey did not wear "8" in the beginning or end of his career. When he first came up, Benny Bengough wore the number and when Dickey came back to coach, Yogi Berra was sporting it. In the neck of the jersey is the "Wilson" label and adjacent is the size tag "46". Below this is a gray felt patch with the name "Dickey" in blue chain stitch. Below this is an autograph in black marker that rates a 7. On the inside front tail is a gray felt patch with the year "49" which has been done in blue chain stitch. Across the front of the jersey is the name "New York" and on the back is the player number "33". Both the name and number are made of blue felt. The front and back have been restored. Included with the uniform are stirrups, an undershirt and pants from the 1955 season. In the neck of the undershirt is the "McAuliffe" label and on the back of the undershirt is the name "Dickey" written in black marker. On the front of the undershirt is the size "48". Inside the waistband of the pants is the "Wilson" label with the size "40" and adjacent is the wash tag. Below this is a gray felt patch with "W. Dickey 1955" done in blue chain stitch. Next to this is an autograph in black marker that rates a 7. Written in the waistband, in black magic marker, is "33-1" denoting the player number and set number, respectively. The uniform shows wear and with the exception of the restoration on the front and back of the jersey appears to have no other alterations of any kind.
