In only his fourth season in the National Hockey League, Mario Lemieux proved his hockey excellence in a large way in 1987-88. He won the scoring title with an NHL-best 70 goals, added 98 assists and finished with 168 points. Lemieux was honored with his first of three Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame immediately after his first retirement in 1997, waiving the normal three-year waiting period and In 2017, he was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players. This trophy stands approximately 14.5 inches tall and the front engraving reads “HART MEMORIAL TROPHY Presented to the NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE as its MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AWARD”. Below is an engraved plate reading “MARIO LEMIEUX PITTSBURGH PENGUINS 1987-88”. The top of the trophy resembles a silver torch atop a hexagonal wooden pedestal and is surrounded by a decorative design that resembles flames. A beautiful display piece from one of the all-time hockey greats. A Hart Trophy won by Guy Lafleur in the 76-77 season sold for nearly $22,000. This trophy was displayed at the league office and is identical to the one that was given to Lemieux.
