For a six-year period in the early to mid-1960s, Sandy Koufax was like a comet streaking through the baseball sky. In those half-dozen years, Koufax achieved pitching perfection, blending a near-100 mph fastball with a curve that broke like a Wiffleball in a wind tunnel, and he pitched with a regal bearing that conveyed an air of invincibility. The Brooklyn-born southpaw came to the Dodgers in 1955 and spent the first six years of his career learning how to control his ungodly stuff. Then, between 1961 and ‘66, he was money in the bank, compiling a 129-47 regular-season and 4-2 World Series record in that time and leading the NL in wins and shutouts three times each, complete game twice, strikeouts four times (setting ML record in ‘65 with 382), and ERA five times. He pitched a no-hitter in all but one of those seasons and won the Cy Young Award three times, including 1963 (the year he wore this shirt) when he also won the MVP award after going 25-5 with a 1.88 ERA and 306 Ks. Koufax's career was cut short by an arthritic pitching elbow that forced him to retire after the ‘66 season at age 31, but for his dominance he was the youngest man ever elected to the Hall of Fame, and only the sixth player to be elected in his first year of eligibility. This road flannel uniform worn by Koufax during his MVP year has the "Rawlings" label with the size "44" on the left front tail. Below this is the name "Koufax" and underneath is the year "63," both in blue chain stitch. On the inside left front tail is the wash tag and adjacent is the flag tag reading "Set 1 1963." Across the front is the name "Los Angeles" in script style letters made of blue felt. The number "32" appears on both the left breast and on the back. The numbers on the front are made of red felt and on the back in blue felt. There is a repair on the back number "2." The jersey appears to have no other alterations of any kind. It comes with a 16" x 20" framed color photograph of Koufax kneeling in what might be this very Dodger uniform. Koufax signed the photo in black marker and the signature rates a 9.
