Leroy “Satchel” Paige was the greatest Negro League pitcher of all-time. Paige won both a Negro League Championship in 1942 and a MLB World Series in 1948. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971, the first player to be inducted based upon his play in the Negro leagues. Offered is a gold pocket watch that was presented to him when he visited Wrigley field with the Kansas City Monarchs on what was called “Satchel Paige Day” to face the Memphis Red Sox. Paige received multiple gifts on July 26th, which were highlighted by this gold pocket watch. Elgin manufactured pocket watch. Engraved on the back reads “TO SATCHEL PAIGE WORLD’S GREATEST PITCHER FROM THE CHICAGO DEFENDER WORLD’S GREATEST WEEKLY JULY 26, 1942”. The master spring is in working condition. Very minor scratching but the watch remains in beautiful condition. This watch is accompanied by a July 25th 1942 Chicago Defender newpaper artile titled "CHICAGO TO HONOR SATCHEL PAIGE SUNDAY" with the subtitle reading "Defender To Give Gold Watch" and details how Paige will be presented him a gold pocket watch when he visits Wrigley Field. An incredible hobby fresh vintage piece from baseball history.
