Six-time All-Star first baseman George McQuinn came to the Browns in 1937 after spending 7 years in the Yankee chain. "Big George"played in St. Louis for 8 seasons and his opening-game home run gave the Browns their first-ever World Series win in 1944. A side bar to the ‘45 season was that McQuinn, who was classified 4-F because of a bad back, was reclassified to 1-A, prompting the intervention of a U.S. Congressman to keep him with the team. McQuinn wore this Browns home flannel jersey during that season. In the neck is the size tag "42" and next to this is the "Rawlings" label. On the left front tail is the name "McQuinn" and under this is the year "45." Both the name and year are made of brown chain stitch. Across the front of the jersey is the name "Browns" and on the back is the player number "3." Both the name and number are made of brown on orange felt. The front of the shirt has been restored. On the left sleeve is the war patch. The jersey shows game-use and with the exception of the restored front, appears to have no other alterations of any kind.
