Doug Jones made his 44th appearance of the year in the A's 7-5 loss to the New York Yankees. Doug relieved Jim Mecir in the ninth inning with a man on second and nobody out. He retired Jose Vizcaino on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher to first, with David Justice advancing to third. Doug then retired Tino Martinez on a fly to left with Justice holding at third. Jones caught Jorge Posada looking on a called third strike to end the inning. Doug threw seven strikes and two balls in his one inning of relief. The A's were one game behind Boston and Cleveland for the AL Wild Card.
