Max Carey, a .285 lifetime hitter who had a 20-year big league career in the 1910s and ‘20s, mainly with the Pittsburgh Pirates, was known for his airtight play in centerfield and for the speed he showed leading the NL in steals 10 times. While in his 70s Carey sent these two typewritten letters to the president of the Baseball Writers Association in 1962 and ‘63, along with an early photo of him and a postcard depicting his Hall of Fame plaque which he signed with the words, "Cannot HIT – unless you SWING." He also hand-wrote his stats from the 1922 season. All items are in excellent condition and the signatures on the letters and postcard rate near-perfect 10s. The original envelopes come with the letters.
