One of the saddest moments in sports history came on June 13, 1948 when a dying Babe Ruth made his last public appearance at the Silver Anniversary of Yankee Stadium. As Babe's No. 3 uniform was retired, a dozen or so of his teammates from that inaugural 1923 season watched in tears as Ruth said his farewell in a husky whisper. One of those men was George Pipgrass, a pitcher who had won 10 games and lost 3 in ‘23. The Yankees' letter and invitation to Pipgrass to attend the ceremonies, and a reception at owner Jacob Ruppert's East Side brewery, have been beautifully preserved, as have the signatures on the back of the invitation of 15 Yankees including Bob Meusel, Joe Dugan and Carl Mays. All the signatures rate a virtual 10 and the only imperfections on the stationery are a few slight fold marks.
