This original drawing of heavyweight contender Gerry Cooney by preeminent sports artist Leroy Neiman captures Cooney moments after he beat up Broderick Mason at The Felt Forum in Madison Square Garden on August 22, 1979. Neiman's minimalist, edgy pen and ink drawings get to the essence of his subject, which explains why Neiman's illustrations through the years have been hung on countless living room and den walls. His depiction of Cooney, his eyes burning with competitive desire, may be one of Neiman's best works. The sketch of Cooney is in
brown pencil and set against a light brown background on which Neiman wrote, "Gentleman Gerry Cooney...after KO of Broderick Mason, 1:44 of 4th round." Neiman's signature is the lower right corner. The sketch is in excellent condition and measures 11" x 14" within a 16" x 19" brown wood frame.
