Seattle Slew's story is another reminder of how fickle the sport of kings can be. While millionaires with vast racing holdings spend millions of dollars to breed and race classic winners, a group of friends put together $17,500 to purchase Seattle Slew as a yearling, then watched him win a Triple Crown and establish himself as one of the leading sires of the 20th Century. After winning the Kentucky Derby on May 7, 1977, Slew, ridden by jockey Jean Cruguet, cruised to wins in the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes, making Slew the tenth Triple Crown winner and first unbeaten winner. Slew retired at the end of the 1978 season having earned over $1.2 million in purses. A winning $2 ticket from the Belmont Stakes rests under an engraved image of Seattle Slew in mid-race, in a 12" x 15" frame. The ticket is in near mint condition.
