“The Great One” is the leading point-scorer in NHL history, with more assists than any other player has points, and is the only NHL player to total over 200 points in one season – a feat he accomplished four times. In addition, he tallied over 100 points in 16 professional seasons, 14 of them consecutive. After his retirement in 1999, he was immediately inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, making him the most recent player to have the waiting period waived. The NHL retired his jersey number 99 league-wide, making him the only player to receive this honor. Inside the back below the collar is the “STARTER” manufacturer’s tag, below is a white strip tag reading “56-R”. On the inside back middle tail is a patch that reads “New York Rangers 1997-98 Season MeiGrayGroup”. Diagonally across the front of the jersey reads “RANGERS”. Across the back is the player name “GRETZKY” sewn directly onto the jersey. The player number “99” appears on both sleeves as well as the back of the jersey. All lettering and numbering is done in red on white tackle twill. The Captain’s “C” patch has been stripped from the upper left chest with an outline remaining. Gretzky briefly wore the captain's "C" with the Rangers when captain Brian Leetch was injured and out of the lineup. Jersey is sans the velcro insert which is typically seen on Gretzky game-used jerseys. On the back right and left tails of the jersey are the embroidered “NHL” and “STARTER” logos. The fighting strap is intact. This jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows appropriate use with board burns and stick marks. There are also indications of additional non hockey related wear present. Accompanied by a MeiGray Group LOA as well as the formal certification documents entering the jersey into their database.
