Mickey Mantle knocked this baseball clean out of Busch Stadium in Game Six of the 1964 World Series to mark the penultimate home run of Mantle's fabled record tally. It was the first pitch delivered by Cardinals southpaw Curt Simmons after he hung a curveball to Roger Maris, who broke a one-one tie with his answer. Mantle's blast would establish this sixth inning power surge as the first back-to-back World Series homers since Ruth and Gehrig. Spalding manufactured ONL Giles baseball with the added handwritten notation "Home Run Hit By Mickey Mantle Busch Stadium St. Louis - About 1:45 pm. Wed Oct 14, 1964 In World Series Between Yanks & Cardinals Yanks - Cardinals Final Game Won By Cards 7-5 Oct 15" on the side panel and in our opinion the notation rates a 9. This lot is accompanied by a notarized LOA from the gentlemen who caught the baseball and in part reads “This is to certify that I was present when this baseball was hit by Mickey Mantle. I was on vacation in St. Louis and a friend and myself were walking down by the baseball stadium when the ball came over the wall. Two black boys lunged for the ball, it bounced in the air, and my friend caught it. My friend wrote on the ball and sent it home with me to give to dad, Sam Gurtner, who was a baseball fan always listening to baseball games. The baseball has always been in my possession until this date." This ball could be considered a key relic from the Mick's final postseason victory as the Yankees ultimately fell to the Cardinals in the series. Also accompanied by a MEARS LOA.
