Measuring 33-1/4" tall, this wooden campaign cane is topped by a carved ivory knob with the raised likeness of statesman and orator Henry Clay. The ivory head measures 3-1/2"-tall and 1-1/4" at its widest point. The item projects a generally EX/MT appearance with tiny cracks visible on the top of the ivory. Clay canes are among the earliest known varieties of these campaign implements. Very few are known to still exist and they are seldom offered at auction. At more than 160 years old, and considering that Clay never ascended to the presidency, this cane is extremely rare.
