Arguably the best player in Major League Baseball history, Willie Mays was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 1979. Mays was a 24-time All-Star, a World Series champion, a two-time National League MVP and led the National League in home runs four times. In addition to his offense, Mays dazzled with the glove, winning 12 Gold Glove Awards while making some legacy-defining catches throughout his career. This is likely the last uniform worn by Hall of Famer Willie Mays as a San Francisco Giant as the Giants started the season wearing flannels and then switched to knits. Mays was traded to the Mets 19 games into the '72 season and never wore a knit as a Giant. This road flannel uniform was gifted by Mays to Willie McCovey and was on display at McCovey’s restaurant in Walnut Creek, CA. Attached inside the collar is a grey strip tag reading the player name “Mays” embroidered in black script style writing. Across the chest reads “SAN FRANCISCO” and on the back is the player number “24” All numbering and lettering is done in the same black on orange tackle twill. Inside the right waistband of the pants is the Spalding manufacturer’s tag with a year “72” tag adjacent above. Inside the rear waistband is a strip tag reading “Mays 24-32-25” embroidered in black. Adjacent written in pencil are seamstress notes, “W 33” Take In Legs + Tighten Elastic”. This uniform is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows appropriately light use given the fact that Mays was traded early in the season. Accompanied by a Photo-Match.com LOA grading the jersey a perfect 10.
