This year marks the 60th anniversary of Lou Gehrig's untimely death at age 38 from ALS. The dye was cast when Gehrig removed himself from the lineup on May 2, 1939 after a then-record 2,130 games. He was then diagnosed with the terminal disease and when he died on June 2, 1941, baseball's innocence died with him. This magnificent Gehrig-signed ball treasures a man whose legacy of strength, courage and kindness will never die. The always courtly Gehrig signed the ball on a side panel, "To Tony, With kindest regards, cordially, Lou Gehrig," in black ink. The inscription and signature have held up remarkably well, with each word clear and distinct and the characteristic circular arcs of the "L" and G" perfectly intact on a signature that rates a strong 8. The PSA-certified N.L. ball is lightly toned with a few scattered stain marks including a few that touch but don't affect the quality of the inscription and signature.
