The 1924 Negro League World Series (or Colored World Series) was the first such series and pitted the Kansas City Monarchs against the Hillsdale team of Darby, Pa. It opened in KC's Blues Stadium on October 11, 1924, when this great 7" x 36" panoramic photo was taken of the two teams lined up before the game at KC's Blues Stadium. The series, won by the Monarchs five games to four, was a personal victory for league president (and HOFer) Rube Foster, who fought to keep the black game alive in the face of big league segregation. Foster stands proudly in the photo along with other team owners including the Monarchs' J.L. Wilkinson and the Hillsdales' Ed Bolden, flanked by the teams which include the Monarchs' HOFer Bullet Joe Rogan. Over the years, more than 170 Negro leaguers signed in the white area around which the photo is mounted, including HOFer Monte Irvin, Double Duty Radcliffe, Buck O'Neil, Lefty Mathis, Gene Benson, future big leaguer George Altman, etc. Signatures range between 7 and near 10s.
