Born September 1. 1866 "Gentleman Jim" Corbett changed the face of boxing when he defeated John L. Sullivan for the Championship in 1892. An educated man, Corbett became a student of the science of boxing. Corbett became the first boxer in history to win the heavy weight title wearing boxing gloves, effectively ending the bareknuckle boxing era. These two cabinet cards both picture the champ looking dapper and sophisticated. The first identifies him as "Champion of the world" and the reverse has "A lady's thoughts while witnessing Gentlemen Jack" . The second has a facsimile signature printed on the bottom and reverse features an advertisement for "X-Zalia". Both cards are in good condition with light discoloration due to age. One card shows more wear than the other including a heavy crease to one corner that has been reinforced on the reverse with tape.
