From 1946 to 1977, Clarence Campbell ruled the NHL like a potentate and during that time his kingdom grew in size from six to 18 teams. As league president, Campbell's fingerprints were all over his sport during his reign. Before presiding over the league's annual pension society meeting in January 1967, he wrote this two-page typewritten "Special Notice" letter dated January 10 in which he precisely laid out the agenda of the meeting for league owners. Campbell signed the letter on National Hockey League Pension Society stationery in blue pen, with the signature rating an eight.
