On October 25, 1999, the golf world suffered an unspeakable loss when Payne Stewart was tragically killed at age 42 when a Lear jet he was aboard on the way to a PGA tournament in Houston flew uncontrolled for hours and crashed in South Dakota. The dashing Stewart, known to even non-golf fans by his jaunty tam o'shanter cap and knickers, had a personality and wit as strong as his game. This is saying a lot since in his 17 years as a pro he had 18 tour wins. Highlights include the U.S. Open in 1991 and 1999 (clinched by his unforgettable 15-foot par putt on the 72nd hole, the longest ever to decide an Open) and the PGA in 1989, when he entered the final round six strokes back then shot a 67 to win by one stroke. This lot of items worn by Stewart bring to mind his endearing style and the lingering sense of loss one still feels. They include a size L/XL green Kangol cap and size-34 green pair of Top-Flight blue and green plaid knickers, which are belted at the waist and have metal clasps and ties at the bottom of each leg. There is also a pair of green socks with the name "Payne Stewart" stitched in white upper case letters and the Stewart logo, an image of him leaning on a gold club. The items come with a copy of a letter from Stewart's widow.
