Low-key but strong-willed Walter "Smoky" Alston took over the reigns of the Dodgers in 1953 and remained in charge for 23 seasons. During the last 5 seasons, the team played in Brooklyn, and Alston took it to a world championship in 1955 and a pennant in 1956. After moving to Los Angeles, Alston harnessed the lightning arms of Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale to win 5 more pennants and two more titles before he retired, after winning the pennant in 1974. The 6-time Manager of the Year and Hall of Famer was presented with this silver-plated, gold-tinted jewelry box on January 25, 1966 as winner of the Rogers Hornsby Award by the Houston chapter of the BBWAA. The cover of the 6-3/4" x 9" box features an intricate, engraved design around an inscription praising Alston for "Leading your Dodgers to the world championship." The exterior of the box has some scratches on the bottom, but the wood interior is in very good condition.
